Why Skills Training is the Key to a More Productive Workplace

The boss was sure the issue was poor employees who refused to stick to company procedures. After dedicating time studying how communication worked in the organisation, the real problem was clear.

Messages moved through the organisation like broken telephone. Orders from leadership would be confused by middle management, who would then communicate incorrect instructions to employees.

Nobody was intentionally making difficulties. The whole team was trying, but the communication systems were totally stuffed.

The breakthrough came when we totally switched the entire approach. Instead of one-way lectures, we started doing proper discussions. Staff told us about near misses they’d experienced. Supervisors really heard and put forward more questions.

It worked straight away. Injuries fell by nearly half within twelve weeks.

It became clear to me – proper education isn’t about smooth talking. It’s about human connection.

Real listening is probably the most important skill you can build in communication training. But most people think hearing means nodding and providing supportive sounds.

That’s not listening. Proper listening means not talking and truly hearing what they want to communicate. It means posing queries that show you’ve understood.

Here’s the reality – most managers are terrible listeners. They’re already formulating their answer before the other person finishes talking.

I tested this with a phone provider in down south. During their staff sessions, I monitored how many occasions managers talked over their staff. The usual was less than a minute.

Of course their staff happiness ratings were awful. Staff felt unheard and undervalued. Dialogue had turned into a one-way street where supervisors presented and staff appeared to listen.

Written communication is another complete disaster in most workplaces. People fire off digital notes like they’re messaging friends to their buddies, then are surprised when problems occur.

Email tone is particularly tricky because you can’t hear tone of voice. What seems straightforward to you might sound hostile to someone else.

I’ve seen numerous office disputes blow up over unclear messages that should have been resolved with a two-minute phone call.

The most extreme example I witnessed was at a bureaucratic organisation in the ACT. An message about spending decreases was written so unclearly that 50% of employees thought they were getting fired.

Chaos broke out through the workplace. Employees started updating their CVs and contacting job agencies. It took three days and multiple clarification meetings to sort out the misunderstanding.

All because an individual failed to compose a simple message. The ridiculous part? This was in the communications division.

Discussion management is where most businesses lose huge quantities of time and money. Ineffective conferences are common, and they’re terrible because no one understands how to run them properly.

Effective sessions need clear purposes, focused agendas, and a person who maintains conversations focused.

Cross-cultural issues play a huge role in business dialogue. Our diverse employee base means you’re dealing with team members from numerous of various cultures.

What’s seen as direct talking in Anglo society might be interpreted as rude in various cultures. I’ve observed countless problems arise from these cultural variations.

Education should address these differences honestly and usefully. Employees require practical tools to handle multicultural communication well.
